Three Key Safety Features of a Quality Garage Door System

Most people don’t give their garage door systems much thought—until they experience a problem. Not only is your garage door the largest moving component of your home, it also likely weights a hundred pounds or more!

The good news, is that quality garage door systems have key safety features, which can help protect your family, your pets and your belongings.

Auto Reverse

If your garage door system detects (and/or experiences) the slightest amount of resistance while the door is on its way down, it will automatically reverse course.

This auto-reverse function comes standard with all garage doors that were manufactured after 1991, and it can be especially handy if you have small children or pets. If your child, cat or dog tries to slip under the door while its closing, the door will reverse on the chance it makes contact.

If you’re concerned the auto-reverse feature may not be functioning as well as it should be, you can always test it with a stationary object, such as a brick, bucket or paint can.

Mechanical Release / Manual Controls

If the power goes out (or your garage door motor decides to quit), and you’ve found yourself stuck inside your garage, don’t fret.  In this case, you’ll want to look for a red handle (the red handle is usually attached to the door, but it’s location could vary based on the make and model of your system.)

Once you find (and pull on) the handle, you’ll find this allows you to bypass the garage door motor, and you’ll be able to open the door manually.

If you don’t know where the manual controls for your garage door system are and/or you have questions about how to use them, call Above the Rest Garage Door Repair today at 719-499-0491.

Infrared Sensors

Modern garage door opening systems come with an infrared sensor; the sensor is typically located on the track, in close proximity to the ground.

If something obstructs the beam (ie: your cat, your dog or your child’s remote-controlled truck), not only will the motor prevent the door from closing any further, it will open the door back up.

If you want to test the infrared sensor, this can be done with a pole, broomstick or other type of solid object.
