Top 3 Attractions in Colorado Springs

If you and your family are considering visiting Colorado Springs, you’re in luck.  The area is a top-rated pick for those who are wanting to experience nature, in addition to those who are interested in exploring the region’s culture.

Below you’ll find the top 3 attractions in Colorado Springs.

Pikes Peak

The top of Pike’s Peak is more than 14,000 feet above sea level and the mountain is nearly 8,000 feet above Colorado Springs. The mountain has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and it’s comprised of pink granite.

Those who hike the mountain can enjoy several visitor’s centers, some of which have restaurants and gift shops. Although the mountain boasts several hiking trails, by far, the most populate, is the Barr Trail, which approaches the Pikes Peak summit from the east. Hikers should keep in mind that the one-way trip to the summit is about 13 miles, so if you’ve considering adding this hike to your Colorado Springs to-do list, you’ll want to come prepared.

Garden of the Gods

Much like Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods has also been designated as a national landmark.

It is located approximately six miles northwest of downtown Colorado Springs and the park is open daily. Its hours of operation run from 5am to 11pm during May, June, July, August, September and October, and the park is open between 5am and 9pm during the months of November, December, January, February, March and April.

Visitors can explore the park on their own, by foot or by bicycle, or they can schedule a guided tour with the Visitor and Nature Center.  The paid tours vary in length (you can schedule a tour by van, by Segway or by Jeep), but if you’re looking for a more unique experience, locals suggest reaching out to Academy Riding Stables to reserve a spot on one of their guided horseback tours.

Cheyanne Mountain Zoo

The Cheyanne Mountain Zoo is the nation’s only mountain zoo, and bringing your family here is bound to provide memories that will last a lifetime.  The zoo boasts a wide range of exhibits and visitors can get an up-close look at more than 30 different types of endangered animals.

Have you ever wanted to pet a giraffe? You can do that here! Feeding the giraffes is among the zoo’s top-rated attractions.

Visitors are also encouraged to take a trip to the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, which is included in the cost of your admission. The shine is loved 1.4 miles up a scenic highway and it is dedicated to the memory of Will Rogers, who lost his life in a plane crash.  When you visit the shrine’s top deck, you’ll be more than 8,100 feet above sea level and you’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking views of the city.
