Most people don’t give their garage door systems a lot of thought- until they stop working.

Safety first
The low-end, starting weight for most garage doors starts at 150 pounds, and it can increase substantially from there, depending on what you buy.
As such, you’ll want to make sure it opens both efficiently and safely. This is especially important if you have pets and/or children. Newer garage door systems have enhanced safety features, which can give you added peace of mind.
We also wanted to point out that most systems that were manufactured before 1993 only had one automatic reversal safety system. Ultimately, if your garage door came into contact with something as it was closing, it would stop and reverse course.
Newer systems also have a photo sensor, which means if your cat runs out the door while it is closing, that motion will trip the photo sensor, and it will cause your garage door to open back up. Most people find they prefer to have a system that has both touch and photo sensors.
It’s also worth noting that newer systems run more quietly than older ones. If you or one of your family members has a bedroom that’s located above the garage, this can be of great value.
Increased security
Garage door openers that were manufactured before 1993 were not nearly as technologically advanced as the ones that are being used today. Why is this important? Well, if you programmed an old remote using DIP switches, that were set in a +, – or 0 position, it would be a lot easier for would-be burglars to replicate the code, making it easier for them to break into your home (easily) when you’re not around.
Newer systems have millions, if not billions of available codes, which makes the garage door opener signal much harder to hack.
Smart phones- not just for making calls
Gone are the days of dead garage door opener batteries and lost garage door openers! Newer systems allow you to pair your smart phone with the motor, which means you can open and close your garage door from anywhere you have a WiFi connection.
